Students gladly spend serious time learning, resting and reflecting over Scripture.
Converge Canada is so excited to be a part of the journey of university students that are engaging in scripture. There is evidence of a hunger among students and young people for serious engagement with Scripture and the desire to use their natural gifts to advance the Gospel.
How are they doing that?
Students love engaging with the Bible. That is what InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Scripture Camps (ranging in 3 to seven days in length) continue to demonstrate. As soon as their spring semester ends, students gladly spend serious time learning, resting and reflecting over Scripture. This requires sacrifice on their part.
Hundreds of students regularly meet in small groups to study Scripture.
Intensive Scripture Camps deepen a hunger to be in the Bible throughout the school year. Bible studies, generally led by students themselves, continue to be a cornerstone of InterVarsity’s work on campuses. Some students step up to leading Bible studies on Campus because of their experience at Scripture camp. For example, at Brock University, a student agreed to lead a Bible study after being at Scripture Camp. She now has 11 other students meeting weekly with her to study Mark’s Gospel. At campuses in Eastern Ontario, another 14 students are leading various Bible engagement activities based on training they received at Scripture Camp. This reverberates across the country with hundreds of students regularly meeting in small groups to study Scripture.
Understanding the whole Biblical story.
A graduating student in BC came away from his 3rd scripture camp with a desire to lead “Good Bible study” with his fellow alumni. He noticed a difference between the small groups he had been in on campus where people were more focused on catching up throughout the week as they were studying scripture. At camp, he found that the focused inductive approach alongside the teachers’ preparation and facilitation of the track led to fruitful and meaningful discussions. The Old Testament passages and other biblical references got him excited to understand the interconnectedness of the whole biblical story so that he could lead bible studies in a similar way in the future.
314 Students engaged in Scripture Camp.
This past year, Converge Canada, along with others, contributed to ensure the registration costs for participants was reduced to make the camps more accessible. Scripture Camps were held in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
In total, 314 students/young adults participated, and 51 staff/teachers/facilitators were present. Revelation, Psalms, James, Mark, Luke and Acts were studied across various locations.
